YMCA

There are so many things about Korea that are backwards.

They are insanely against the idea of homosexuality. They even go as far as to believe with everything inside them that there are NO gay Koreans.

After I had been in Korea for about a month (possibly less), there was a huge scandal in Korea. 3 Korean celebrities committed suicide. Two of those celebs were men who had come out of the closet.... and after being ridiculed by society here in Korea, they decided they couldn't take it any longer.

What kind of a society is so hateful towards something they don't understand... that it seems like the only escape is suicide?? I just cannot comprehend that.

The reason this is so backwards in Korea... is that the men here are so beyond the metrosexual line into homosexual-land. I cannot even begin to explain. You would have to be in the country to understand what I'm talking about.

First off... men are raised to be complete wimps. No one leaves their parents home until they are married. If that means living at home with your parents until you are 40... then so be it. People in the states move out at 18 and never move home. I cannot wrap my head around the idea of living at home until I'm well into middle-age.

Thats the least of their problems. They are raised to be complete wimps, so it would only make sense that the lack of testosterone would seep into their fashion. Fashion is as mixed up here as it is at the local thrift store. Everyone just throws on as much "trendy" stuff as they possibly can, whether it looks good together or not. That's not the point.

Men are worse than women. Not only do they have to have their own area of stores, but men in korea actually shop in women's clothing as well. As if the huge selection they have here isn't enough... I have to worry about a dude wearing the same pants as me.

I was walking up the stairs in the subway on Saturday and there was a Korean couple ahead of me. They both had on brown leather jackets... then I looked down and they both had the same white stitched jeans on. I would never date a guy who wears the same pants as me. That is taking the "matchy matchy" thing a little too far.

Matching outfits isn't cool.... regardless of how much you love one another.

Which brings me to the funny thing I was just reminded of.

one of my students, a 5 year old Korean kindergartener.... loves to sing "YMCA".

you know... YYYYYMCA...

He sings it under his breath as he works. I cannot help but laugh.

Out in Virginia there were a lot of Korean exchange students and they were beyond metro. I totally understand what you are talking about.
